Another busy month at the Bowlo April 2008:
Well another month has gone by and it seems to go quicker the older you get. Pennants has started at our club with some good results but others not so good. All the singles finals will be held on the 5th April and I will report on them in the next edition, hopefully along with a photo of all 3 victors. It won’t be long till our southern friends start to arrive and that will certainly give a kick along to bowls at the club, especially on Tuesdays. We have two of the best coaches on the north coast in Terry Sheen and Ted Butler so if you are in a bad patch at the present and need help to get yourself out of a hole, give them a call. To all the Junior Players and their Parents go to www.evansheadit.com.au and click on the “Bowling Club” link and there you will find many pictures and other good info then drop me an email and I am only to happy to send you the original Picture, makes a good desktop picture on your child’s computer.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
The junior championships have now been completed with the fours final having been played at Lismore City Bowling Club. The winning team consisted of Jacob Speers, Reece Wilson, Jacob Heffernan and Aaron Teys (skip). This win will give Aaron three more titles to his name.
The final was an interesting game with Amanda Cselka, Stef Cselka, James Gannon and skip Beau Beddoes putting up a bold showing before going down 24 shots to 15. Well done to Aaron and his team and congratulations to Beau and his team for making the final.
The first night of junior training last Thursday 20th March was a great success. In all 21 juniors attended and were under the coaching of Tony Scott. Congratulations to President John and Evans Head Bowls Club, where the event was held, for the green space, lights and especially the sausage sizzle had by all after the training.
The juniors were put through an intense training schedule by Tony Scott and the reports I have received have all been good.
Last weekend I took Stef Cselka (as well as her mother) and Beau Beddoes to the junior tournament at Asquith Bowls Club, where the two juniors put up a tremendous effort in finishing fifth overall. They drew the tough section which was full of State juniors and Stef and Beau finished with three wins, one draw and a loss to the eventual winners.
The winners in their five games had a total of five wins plus ninety eight shots, and were the only team to defeat Stef and Beau. The game between the winners and our juniors had everyone watching before they went down by six shots, so well done Stef and Beau.

Our next training night is the 3rd of April at Casino Bowls Club at 6.00PM.

Championship Games for the Month:
Men’s Minor Singles:
Steve Simmons defeated Peter Klaus 31 to 15. The game in the first half was close with the second half proving all Simmons. Glen Pobje had a close win against Dave Brodin 31 to 25. Dave let this game go in the last 4 ends by driving at the head whereas it would have been better to draw to cut shots down. As John Rodda said “it was anyone’s game.” A good win to Glen who now goes on to play Steve Simmons for a finals berth. Barry Toms fought hard to win against Barry Tarver 31 to 25. It was tit for tat right throughout this game with Tomsy coming out on top in the last 6 ends of the game. Up and coming bowler Luke Jones, who is only 11 years old, played John Forshaw in a very good game of bowls. Early on it was anyone’s game being 17 all, but young Luke, in the last bit of the game, just lost a little bit of concentration with John going on to win 31 to 22. Well done Mighty Mouse LUKE! In his next game John Forshaw went down to Steve Simmons 31 to 18. This was a close game for the first 10 or so ends but Steve realized that staying out there too long would shorten his drinking time so he blazed home in the last half of the game and headed straight for the bar for a well earned drink. Phil Wernicke has earned a place in the final by beating Barry Toms 31 to 14. This was a game where I’ll bet Tomsy wishes he was fishing. Steve Simmons had the game against Glen in his sights by leading early on, but faltered and lost 10 ends in a row, with Glen winning 31 to 22. The final between Lucky Phil and Glen is sure to be a good game.
Men’s Major Singles:
Dave Brodin is on fire. He beat Rod Morris 31 to 25 in a very good game of singles bowls. Dave never looked like losing this game and skipped away to a 26 to 12 lead. Russell pulled back in the later stages of the game, but once again the nerves of steel from Dave ensured a very good win. (With Dave bowling extremely good bowls, will it work to his favour with a job in the top team as lead?).
Robin Montague, back from holidays, did not lose any touch whatsoever, blowing Eric Swanson off the green in 24 ends with the final score of 31 to 7. Robin played beautiful draw bowls only allowing Eric to win 4 ends for his score of 7. It will be interesting when Robin comes up against the big Fella Langy in the next round. Speaking of the big fella he blew Wayne King off the green 31 to 12, also winning it in 24 ends, Wayne just could not get into this game as Langy showed his great form, and also why he is the number one player in the club. Bill Cooper had a close game against Geoff Hetherington, winning 31 to 16 in 25 ends. You say close game - yes it was because on the 19th end it was 17 to 16 in favour of Bill. Geoff just lost concentration allowing Bill to win the last 6 ends of the game and the match. Super Coach Terry Sheen knocked Jack Kingman off 31 to 16; this is after Jack beat the best lead in the club (Teddles) in the previous round. Jack just could not get the wind factor worked out, where as Terry picked it up from the very first end. Rod Greentree had a good win against Steve Clarke with the score being 31 to 23. Rod played very good draw bowls with Steve not being consistent through the game to really pressure Rod. Brian Sten had a very good win against Glen Pobje 31 to 25. Brian picked up six 3’s and a 4 in the game which gave him the edge over Glen and he played the better draw bowls to record this good win.
Probably the upset was the game where Robin Montague beat John Lang 31 to 30. This was a close game throughout with the biggest margin being only 4 shots. Langy had the game leading 30 to 28 but did not expect Robin to get a 2 to make it 30 all, then a 1 to win the game. A well deserved win to Robin! Brian Sten nearly pulled off the upset of the championship against Bill Cooper but just could not get that elusive 1 to win the final end, with Bill getting 2 shots to clinch the game by the narrowest of margins 31 to 30. What a great performance up against one of the clubs best bowlers. Rod Greentree knocked one of my favorites out by beating Peter Carey 31 to 17. Rod played brilliant bowls with Peter just not being able to get into the game. Terry Sheen had a very good win against Dave Brodin 31 to 12. Dave just could not get into this game with Terry bowling the best draw bowls I have seen him play, and also with a club record of winning 12 ends on the Trot. Heart Stopper extraordinaire Robin Montague again played brilliant bowls in a game against Bill Cooper winning it 31 to 30. (Ironically this was very similar to the game where Bill won by 1 shot against Brian) Bill had the game 30 to 29 but Robin thought otherwise getting 2 singles on the last 2 ends to win it. Robin you’re a bloody wizard to win your last 2 games against 2 of the clubs best players – you deserve to go on and win this championship. Unless Terry (3’s to 4’s to 3’s) Sheen has something to say about that comment, Terry once again played great bowls to beat Rod Greentree 31 to 29. This was a good tight game throughout, with Terry now going on to play Robin Montague in the prestigious Men’s Singles Final.
Men’s Senior Singles:
Fred Vaughan defeated Lionel Bartlett 31 to 21 in a game where Fred was never threatened always holding a comfortable lead throughout the game.
Carl Felsch had a good win against Larry Sandford 31 to 20. Larry just could not get a foothold in this game. Carl converted four 3’s and a 4 to kick him along in the scoring pretty quickly. Alan Gilbert had an easy win against Alby King 31 to 8. Alby just could not get into this game but he can proudly say he has the scalp of the previous win which he achieved. Ken Taylor also had an easy win against Carl Felsch 31 to 9. It was just one of those days were Carl just could not get it right. Barry Mallett had a good win against Bill Mancell 31 to 17. Barry took control of this game from the first end and never looked back. Alan Gilbert could not continue his fine form going down to Ken Taylor 31 to 23. Ken bowled beautiful draw bowls to win this game with Alan just not getting it together. The best win so far in this championship goes to Fred Vaughan who well and truly beat Barry Mallett 31 to 17. Reports are Fred played the best bowls of his life in this game outplaying Barry in every aspect of bowls. Fred now goes on to play Ken Taylor in the final.
Pennants
The No 4’s went down to Alstonville 56 to 49. Bob’s team ended up with a 20 all draw with a 3 on the last end, Alan’s team had a tough game going down by 1 shot 18 to 17. Jim’s team had a loss by 6 shots.
The No1’s had a huge win against Casino RSM 6 - Blot! The Big Fellas team had a win, blowing Gary Burt’s team off the green and nearly back to Casino, with the final score being 25 to 7. While Bill Cooper and Owen Dory had close wins with Bill winning 24 to 15 against Richard Latta and Owen winning 18 to 14 against David Ball. Reports I have gotten say it was a very quiet night up at the RSM Club but let’s not forget what happened last year and not get swelled heads.
The No 6’s got half a point against Bonalbo with Trevor Bulmer’s team recording a draw while the other two teams had losses. The No 5’s faired better recording a 5 to 1 against Lennox Head while the 3’s had a bye.
Women’s Roundup with Yvonne Vaughan
All reports from the pennant teams is that they are all struggling but are hoping for a better second round. The numbers for our social bowls on Wednesday’s has been very small, however we are enjoying ourselves. The club championship fours start on the 16th April so I will have more news next time.
Poem for the Month
Up and down, walking walking,
Often measuring, sometimes chalking;
Shifting mats - keeping score,
thirty ends, maybe more;
Aching back - tired of limb,
Cheers for others, none for him,
Night draws on, darker, darker,
No one cares for he's the marker!
Till next month keep your bowls close to the kitty.
