Evans Head Bowling Club |

Welcome to the Evans Head Bowls Club news, where you will be able to read about what has happened and what is going to happen at the Bowlo.
The big clash between the Mexicans (those south of the border) and us cockroaches was played on the 22nd July. Competition was fierce for the shield with many close games. The lady cockroaches had a struggle on their hands right from the outset and it was right down to the wire with the cockroaches winning by the narrowest of margins, 132 to 130. The men ended up winning 250 to 230, overall we won (again!) 382 to 360. Maybe next year Jeff and your fellow Mexicans. The booby prize for the lowest scoring team which received a calculator to help add the scores up was Alice Peel and team. Alice said that on the last end they got a three which put them into double figures - 11.
A bit of History on the shield, it was conceived by Bill Cooper & Jeff March over a drink or two, maybe three or four, who knows. The shield was purchased by Jeff & Alan Marsden two years later as a way of creating a fun day & friendly competition between bowlers from south of the border & the locals, thus the name Cockroaches & Mexicans.
Mexicans are starting to leave the area and head south, we all wish them a safe trip home and can’t wait till they come back next year, who knows Jeff and the mob may even beat us in the annual clash.
On Saturday 28th we held a charity day for the cancer unit at Lismore Base Hospital, a great day was had and a cheque for $7587.50 was presented to Margaret, Pam and John for the purchase of a defibrillator. The cancer day is an annual event and has purchased many essential items for the Oncology Unit at the hospital, again the generosity of the Evans Head community made this day a great success. Since January 2004 donations have totalled $40, 483.

Sunday 29th was the Flag Unfurling by the number one’s, a game of bowls was had then it was into the serious game of having a few ales and a feed. Although this year was not as successful as last year we are sure that 08 will be a season where we will try and outdo the four flags of 06.

Sunday August 12th we had a charity day, with all proceeds going to help with research into Scleroderma. Over 180 people turned up for the day, the chook board had its ups and downs, Steve Clark seemed to be winning more chooks then I’ve had hot breakfast, on the other side of luck Ron Johnson spent $50 before finally his number was called out, that’s a bloody dear chook Ron. Best dressed team was the “Pink Girls”. Left to right are:
Rhonda George, Carol Jarrett, Maree Barr and Rhonda Hartley.
The Auction proved to be a huge success with over $11,500 being raised. The mystery Auction of a bag of dynamic Lifter (alias cook poop) was placed in a box and dressed up by Sandra Johnson to look like a present. Tom Soward wanted this auction and outbid John Jarrett, Tom you will have the best vegie garden matey, onya for your support. Ron Johnson said it was a very successful day and thanks all the sponsors, bowlers, helpers, drinkers, everyone really.
Championship games for the month:
Major Pairs:
Rod Greentree and Robin Montague defeated Jim Thomas and Ted (Teddles) Butler in a close hard fought game 22 to 21.In another struggle to win Geoff Hetherington and Barry O'Keefe defeated Barry Heap and Gary Hackett 22 to 20. Well done to both winners. Great games with a good crowd watching. The following week Rod Greentree and Robin Montague went down to J Lang and Phil Benton in a close game. Lang skipped away twice in the game only to be hauled back to even the scores, but the five Montague got on the 19th end to bring it back to 20 to 24 was not enough with Lang eventually winning the game 25 to 21. Billy Cooper and Wayne King had a comfortable win against Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe 21 to 12.
The Major and Minor Pairs final were played on the 16th Aug, J Lang and P Benton had a comfortable win against W King and W Cooper 29 – 7. The minor pairs was a very close game, G Pobje and D Pobje got off to a flying start leading 12 nil after 4 ends but S Cselka and T Dance did not give up clawing back to win the game 22 to 21 on the last end.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
Two of our well known bowlers, Amanda and Stef Cselka returned from Warilla Bowls Club where they were participating in the NSW Combined High School Championships and State Trials.
The girls did extremely well with Stefanie Cselka reaching the quarter finals of the singles before going down to a State representative in a very tight game of bowls.
Amanda Cselka, not to be outdone by her younger sister, reached the quarter finals in the pairs, playing with a young lass from Port Macquarie before going down to two State players in A. Hyland and N. Van Eldik by two shots. Well done both young ladies. Stef on Left and Amanda.
Amanda and Stefanie would like to thank Club Limited, the Ladies and Mens clubs for their financial assistance of $600 to get them to Warilla, both girls wore the green and yellow shirts with pride in all their games.
Three of our Juniors played at Kyogle Tournament on the 12th August, where they were congratulated on their abilities and sportsmanship. The three bowlers were Amanda and Stefanie Cselka and the mighty little mouse Luke Jones, all coming from Evans Head K12 school.
Yours in Junior bowls
