Evans Head Bowling Club

Main Page

Another busy month at the Bowlo August 2008:
Well hello bowlers, the AGM was held and our new committee is hard at work already. Jim Verrall is our President along with Barry Heap and Barry O’Keefe as Vice Presidents. Secretary is Robin Montague with Steve Cselka as Assistant Secretary. Bruce Cox is the man who looks after the money as Treasurer. Committee consists of Alan Gilbert, Steve Cselka, Geoff Hetherington and Russell Morris. New blood has been picked for Selector with Fred Vaughan the Numero Uno along with Peter Carey and Terry Sheen. For the first time we have a mixed Committee which consists of: Fred and Yvonne Vaughan, Eric and Merle Swanson, Carol Thomas, Vicki Hart, Jim Mulligan and Super Coach Terry Sheen. I get the feeling that this year is going to be real good and I hope we can snatch a few flags in the next round of pennants.
As you walk into the club you see a magnificent Nissan Micra supplied by Mays Motors Nissan, with only 200 tickets sold at $100 a pop these are great bloody odds. All the proceeds from the raffle go to junior sport in Evans Head.
The Mexicans played the Cockroaches on Saturday the 26th with over 130 bowlers taking part, last year we the cockroaches won by one shot. This year Robin and I counted the score probably 5 times and we kept getting the same figure, Mexicans by 1 bloody shot. What are the odds of a complete reversal of last years result, millions to one you would think? Jeff, the Head Bandito of the Mexicans gracefully accepted the shield but forgot to mention his result against Billy Cooper claiming it was beer that let him down, what sweet revenge by the bandits south of the border to win this shield, till next year our fellow bowlers. Women’s Results: Mexicans 135 – Cockroaches 115. Men’s Results: Mexicans 240 – Cockroaches 259. Over all: Mexicans 375 – Cockroaches 374. Anyway once again super chef John Forshaw and his off sider Marie White cooked up the bowlo’s famous curried sausages and mince hotpots, beautiful food with everyone going home content.

A bit of History on the shield, it was conceived by Bill Cooper & Jeff March over a drink or two, maybe three or four, who knows. The shield was purchased by Jeff & Alan Marsden two years later as a way of creating a fun day & friendly competition between bowlers from south of the border & the locals, thus the name Cockroaches & Mexicans.
Jeff and his bandits are starting to leave the area and head south, we all wish them a safe trip home and can’t wait till they come back, next year it is the decider of the “1 shot wins” to see who reigns supreme on the green.

Pictured are Alan Marsden and Jeff March the instigators of the shield.

Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.

A tremendous amount of bowls for the juniors in the month of August and September.
Amanda Cselka and Stef Cselka have just returned from Warrilla, where they participated in the Combined High Schools state championships.
The girls played three games of singles where they both qualified for the final sixteen.
Amanda was placed fifth and Stef was placed fifteenth. Amanda won her three games with  three wins plus thirty one shots and Stef had two and a half wins plus fifteen. In the round of the final sixteen they were both beaten and did not proceed further.

The pairs were played next day where Amanda teamed with Donna Winsor of Lismore to win their three games three wins plus fifty three to finish first in the group and went to the semi-finals where they played the State champions and were beaten. Amanda and Donna won the Bronze Medal, a great achievement.
Stef played with a girl she did not know to win three games plus thirty four to finish third in the group. Unfortunately Stef and her partner were beaten in the round of sixteen, a very good effort, as Stef did not know the other girls game.

Our other junior Luke Jones, with Stef Cselka go to Roselands on Friday 9th August to play in the Zone’s team in the seven aside. I have a lot of faith in Luke’s ability and being his first trip away representing our Zone will build his confidence up. Stef of course has plenty of experience and will be a guiding hand to Luke during the four days of play. All the best Stef and Luke.

Surely there must be juniors from ten years of age to eighteen years of age that would like to play lawn bowls. The cost is nothing, they will be coached by qualified coaches on a Saturday morning, so Mums and Dads please ring either the Evans Head Club on 66 82 43 43 or ring myself Terry Sheen on 66 82 61 62 any time.

September Stef is away again as I take Stef and her mother to Armidale for the Combined High Schools Zone event.
Yours in bowls Terry Sheen

Seafood Carnival:
This year marked the 40th Anniversary of the Seafood Carnival, and to top it off we invited a highly known local identity by the name of Alby King to open this year’s event. Pictured is Alby King who at 89 years old still throws one hell of a lead bowl down in the game and would rank as one of the best leads in our club.

This Carnival is NOT about the prize money or having to win, it is about the friendships that are made, the laughter, the fun and the excitement of Lawn Bowls, maybe that is why it has survived 40 years and I am sure once next year comes around the whole lot of us will be back again. Kingy tells me that next year he will be donating fish for the raffle for each day, you better take Russell out with you Kingy, just have a look at the picture of his Huge Snapper which I took at the Fishing Classic- Monster it is, Bloody Huge!.

Men’s Major Pairs:
Now I shall mention a game whose card was not handed in and found accidently, in the draw in the front desk, and that is the game between Brendon Day and Tony Morgan verses Luke Jones and Kevin Jones. The game finished on the 17th end with Luke and Kevin winning it easily 24 to 7 in a one sided affair. Well done and sorry about the delay in writing the report. Next Issue will be the Major Pairs Champions.

Tip of the Month:

It is poor tactics to pack a head when playing against a good driver.  Counters that are at a distance of 30cms or so are very hard to beat.

Till next month keep your bowls close to the kitty.
