Another busy month at the Bowlo February 2009:
Evans Head Bowls Singles Match report:
Major Singles:
Peter Carey had a comfortable win against Lionel Bartlett 31 to 17. Biggest upset goes to Bob Jarman who had a close win against the reigning champ Robin Montague 32 to 27, it was 27 all but Bob won the last 4 ends of the game to get the win. Another upset was Jack Kingman well and truly beating Bob Jarman 33 to 19; Jack came home strong scoring 14 shots in the last four ends to leave Bob bewildered. Peter Carey came up against Pete Koskela and won this game 31 to 17 with the game all over after just 22 ends. Glen Pobje defeated Dave Brodin 31 to 18, the game was locked at 15 all but Glen knuckled down and stormed home easily. Brian Sten defeated John Rodda 31 to 24 with Brian scoring 8 shots in the last 4 ends, once again another close game. Brian Sten and Terry Sheen were locked at 30 all with Terry cutting the head on his last two bowls to give Brian the one shot needed for victory, there was never more then 2 to 3 shots right throughout this brilliant game. Glen Pobje had a six shot win against Eric Swanson 31 to 25, there was a mistake in the score card with 2 shots not being given to Eric, Glen bowled well in this game to secure the win. Peter Carey pulled a rabbit out of his hat to win against Jack Kingman 31 to 27, Jack had this game in his sights leading 27 to 21 with Peter getting 10 shots in the last 5 ends, don’t worry Jack a few of us know how you feel as we have been there and done that. Glen’s next game was against Brian Sten with Pobje going away with it in the last bit of the game to win it 31 to 26 in a great game of bowls. Now to the final between Peter and Glen which was a close game throughout, except once again for the last 5 or six ends where Peter got it right and Glen didn’t. Peter bowled better in the end to win the game 31 to 22 in an entertaining game of bowls. Well done Pete for winning the Major Singles which is the most sought after title. It seems a few of us, including me just go to sleep in the last bit of a game, whether it’s nerves or complacency I do not know, but I am happy that others do it as well and not just me.
Minor Singles:
Doug Voltz had a close win against Steve Simmons 31 to 23 with Doug getting home in the last 5 ends. Peter Klaus defeated Barry Tarver 31 to 15 in a well earned win. Luke Jones had a very close win against Phil Wernicke 31 to 29; Phil had this game wrapped up but fell asleep in the last bit of the game with Luke picking up 12 shots to Phil’s 3, well done Luke. Doug Voltz played Steve Cselka and once again Doug got home in the last 5 ends to win it 31 to 23 after being locked at 23 all, many times Steve had 2 and 3 shots but Doug would come in on his last bowl and get the shot. Luke Jones played Peter Klaus with Peter having it all but won leading 27 to 21 but Luke fired and scored 10 shots in the last 7 ends to earn himself a spot in the final against Doug. Doug played Luke in the final and won it 31 to 18, Doug got off to a flying lead and never looked back. Luke also many times had 2 or 3 shots but Doug would get his last bowl in for shot.
Senior Singles:
Ken Taylor skipped off to a huge lead against Kevin Jones but Kev refused to lie down and fought his way back into the game but it was just not enough with Ken going on to win 31 to 25. John Crosby played brilliant bowls to defeat Norm Fox 31 to 14; Norm remarked after the game that “There is your lead in the number 1’s”. Ken Taylor had an easy win against Ray Elley 31 to 12 in a one sided game. The final between Ken and John resulted in a win to Ken 31 to 23. Ken was lucky to get out of jail with this one as he had a big lead of 21 to 9 but John really bowled magnificently to get it back to 24 to 23, but Ken scored 7 shots in the last 2 ends to clinch the win.

Left to right: Ken Taylor, Doug Voltz and Peter Carey singles champions winners.
