Evans Head Bowling Club |

Another busy month at the Bowlo:
Well another year has gone by real quickly; we hope you had a great festive season and that the big red fella called in to your home. This year is sure to be successful for our club as there are many good bowlers, you just have to see the competition on Wednesdays and Fridays for that little yellow envelope. Sunday Turkey Triples have started up with a good turnout with winners and losers being drawn off the table, we must not forget Tuesdays where the numbers have improved over last year mainly due to the Sausage Sizzle after every game - thanks to Slippery and Jim for doing the cooking, I so far this year have resisted the sausages on a Tuesday due to putting on over 3kg during the break and I tell you it is damn hard with the Sausage smell that wafts around on the greens. It was a bit of a wet start to 2008 with a whole week being washed out due to rain, withdrawal symptoms were pretty bad for me and it was a pleasure to get back into it. The Singles Championship nominations are up on the board, entries close on the 8th Feb.
The Pennant Trial teams have gone up on the board; we will be playing on the 16th Feb at South Grafton, the bus will be leaving at 11.30am. The poem below couldn’t go in the last paper as we were pushed for space, so here you go – and no picking on me after reading this Slab, Langy and Lionel.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
Christmas is over and a lot of wet weather to compete with.
Amanda and Stefanie Cselka are working very hard on a new program for their improvement in the world of bowls. Amanda because of her age cannot represent her state, but Stefanie can, so Amanda has been working overtime to assist her sister in trying to make State selection.
Stefanie is working on a new training program, and although Stefanie finds it rigorous and hard she is persevering with the new training and has improved not only her concentration but her fitness as well.
We have another junior that I have started on the new program, Luke Jones who turns eleven years of age on the 5th February this year. Luke shows a lot of promise and if he can step up the work load, he will go a long way.
The two girls have a tournament at Yamba on Monday and Tuesday the 21st and 22nd of January and the Senior/Junior tournament at Ballina Bowling Club on Saturday 26th January where Stefanie will partner John Lang and Amanda will partner Fred Vaughan. A big thanks to Fred for stepping in, as Amanda’s partner had to withdraw.
The District Junior Singles commences on Saturday 2nd February, so good luck to the Juniors that have entered. We have three juniors in the singles, Amanda Cselka, Stefanie Cselka and Luke Jones.
Until next month, yours in bowls,
TERRY SHEEN

Championship Games for the Month:
Men’s Fours:
L Bartlett, F Day, A Gilbert and J Kingman had a great comeback to win the game in the last two ends 24 to 21 against D Voltz, A Marsden, T Butler and M Lavelle. This was the game of the round with Jack leading Merv 20 to 8 on the 13th end, but slowly Merv and team started to catch up with some bloody great bowls. The pressure was starting to show on Jack and Alan with short and wide bowls now happening on a regular basis, and before you knew it, it was 21 all on end 19. Two ends to go and the pressure was on with a few words exchanged between skips and thirds. Ted went to the mat 2 shots down, missing his first shot but on the second you could see Alan slump as Ted picked the kitty up cleanly and followed it into the ditch sitting 10 inches from it. Jack would basically have to rest right on the ditch to regain the shot, this being an extremely hard shot to do. Merv had his bowl and pulled up a few feet short, Alan eagerly was pointing out to Jack their toucher which was a good six feet short of the ditch. Jack lined his bowl up and let it go sweetly and it was right on target hitting his toucher sweet as and into the ditch it went only a few inches from kitty, what a great bloody bowl. This shot sank the opposition and Jack went on to win.
A King, B Toms, B Cox and P Klaus had a good win against J Foreshaw, M Little, S Simmons and P Wernicke 25 to 17, Steve Simmons bowled very good bowls in this game. R Montague, J Rodda, G Pobje and K Turner went down to J Mulligan, T Peel, C Peel and A Rimolbi 11 to 25. P Benton, J Thomas, V Lindsay and R Morris had an upset win against K Hardy, C Wilson, B O'Keefe and J Lang 23 to 19, this was a close game throughout with Langy clawing back to within one shot on a few occasions but Morris's team always got the next few ends to keep their lead intact throughout the game with Vic Lindsay being the star player for Morris and was the key to the win.
D Brodin, B Sten, T Sheen and P Carey had a good win over A King, B Toms, B Cox and P Klaus 22 to 14. This was a close game with P Klaus being only 2 behind with 2 ends to go; Peter said all his team played good. Peter Carey was the star performer playing some very good bowls to record the win for his team. There were a few beers consumed after this game but as Klausy said “No port now”.
Bill Fischer, Steve Clarke, Jim Verrall and Carl Felsch and a hard fought win over Lionel Bartlett, Frosty Day, Alan Gilbert and Jack Kingman 26 to 15. The score does not reflect the final result as with three ends to go Jack was only 4 Shots behind but unfortunately conceded 7 shots in 2 ends and the games was cut short on the 20th end. Alan Gilbert played good draw bowls for Jack with Carl being the bowler of the game pulling off some magnificent shots, on one occasion picking the kitty up sweet and trailing it back 2 metres, going from 2 down to 3 up.
The Wailing Wall
They beat their breasts and cried out loud,
Where the selectors had placed the team selections.
There were some that swore and some that cried,
And some who stood and muttered
Some were proud, some were coy,
And others merely stuttered.
There were voices raised in anger,
Swearing split the air,
There were those who didn't say a thing,
Because they really didn't care.
"I wont play with him", one said,
"He's a bloody hopeless skip."
And one who very quietly said,
"It's time I took my trip."
There were many self selections,
There were lots of "bloody hells!"
There weren't very many
who said the Selectors had done well.
The players knew who should be there,
They knew who to pick,
Just ask them when you hear them say,
"That selector is a Pr#@*."
Each year the tears get deeper,
As on the floor they fall,
From those who stand in anguish
Before the wailing wall.
Till next month keep your bowls close to the kitty.
