Another busy month at the Bowlo July 2008:
Great weather has been around for the last month which has been welcomed by all at the club. Saturday afternoon Open Pairs has kicked off with 3 greens of bowlers on the first day, prizes are good with a $100 jackpot on offer but if it does not go off it increases by $10. Tuesday bowls is a huge success with the BBQ and the friendliness of all the games. Winners and losers are off the table on each green so you don’t have to go out and flog the arse of your opposing team, a game that has a close score is a far better game than one that wins by 30 shots. A car raffle again is underway in our club for the help of junior sports persons, tickets cost $100 each and only 200 will be sold, The prize is a Nissan Micra Automatic supplied by Mays Motors Ballina. My daughter Stefanie has benefited from the previous raffle to help out with costs involved in her bowls program. Other Junior Sports kids have also benefited greatly from this raffle to help them get a kick start weather in rowing or rugby union. A personal big thank you from me and Tania to the club for there generosity and I am sure the other kids parents are of like thankyou’s as us.

Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
Congratulations must go to Stefanie Cselka who has been selected to represent the Northern Zone Combined High Schools. Stefanie goes to Armidale in August with four other bowlers from our area. Best  wishes Stef.
The two girls, Amanda and Stefanie Cselka along with Luke Jones represented our District on Sunday 29th June at Maclean Bowling Club to play for the Junior Digman Shield.

Stefanie and Luke played in the Northern Districts West side , which won the shield from Northern Districts East side which Amanda skipped. The last game of the afternoon was East played West to decide on the winners. Amanda played tremendous bowls with a side that had two other girls and a boy who was having his first representative game. Billy Hounslow was the young lad from Casino R.S.M. club, and you will hear more from Billy as he gets the experience.
A big medal goes to Luke Jones from Evans Head who played all day with a very badly bruised leg which would have kept grown men off the bowling green. Lukes skipper praised the young lad for the bowls that he played. Well done Luke
We have a tournament for Junior/Senior players in August ( with a lot of thanks to our Secretary Manager Roger Hong. More about this event in next months report

Yours in bowls Terry Sheen.

Championship Games for the Month:
Minor Pairs:
Daryl (RSL President) Pobje and Son Glen had a win against Troy Peel and Mick Little of 20 to 17. Troy and Mick played far the better bowls in the game except for the last 3 ends where they gave away 8 shots which were approx 3 to 4 feet from the jack so there was plenty of room to draw shot but unfortunately for them nerves in the dying stages of the game cost them the win. Troy and Mick have been practicing leading upto the game and Mick has definitely improved his bowls. The Pobje Boys have scored a win in this title after coming runner up last year to Steve Cselka and Tony Dance. Well done to both teams and if Troy and Mick stay together next year I feel they will win the title.
The Pobje Father and Son team, Daryl on the Left!

Major Pairs:
Young mighty mouse Luke Jones and Granddad Kevin drew a tough game against the dynamic duo of Wayne King and Bill Cooper and went down big-time 27 to 6 with the game finishing on the 19th end. On the 10th end Kevin was only 5 shots behind 10 to 5 but then it was all Bill and Wayne, and I tell you it will be hard if next to impossible to beat these pair of great bowlers as they head to the final, remember I said next to impossible, they could have an off day but somehow I don’t think so.
Steve Cselka and Alan Gilbert had a narrow loss against Terry Sheen and Peter Carey 20 to 17. Alan and Steve were stuck on 5 and on end 11 were 15 to 5 down with Terry rolling short ends, they won an end and Steve put the mat right on the TEE with Terry watching over his shoulder making sure there was contact with the chalk and Steve let the kitty go right up the other end on the TEE then put his two bowls on the kitty. Peter and Terry did not adjust to the long ends that followed and before you knew it was a one shot game. A bit of drama on the green as Terry tried to put Steve off his game by claiming he had a buggered zipper on his pants, Terry said here look and Steve near collapsed at what was there, what the %$#$ is that!. Any way with Peter down one end into Terry’s, well mid part – groin, I tell you I wish I had me bloody camera it would have been a classic picture. That’s enough of Terry’s fly back to the game, last end Steve drew one right on kitty and then Alan followed up also giving them 2 shots and a possible drawn game with Peter on his last bowl put down a Gem and rested Steve’s bowl and got the shot giving them a well earned win. Steve once again played very good draw bowls and was the pick of the four – hey I only write it as I see it, ask Peter or Terry. Anyway to Bill and Wayne if they happen to play this Pair Peter and Terry, extremely dark sunglasses may be needed if the fly collapses again and possibly a pair of tongs. I think I’m in the poos with this write-up but it was very funny indeed you had to be there.

Major Triples:
Terry Sheen along with Rod Greentree and inform skip Peter Carey had a relatively easy win against Steve Clark, John Rodda and Russell Morris 21 to 13. Russell’s team really was never in this game with the closest margin being 7 shots. Meanwhile superskip Langy along with Jim Verrall and Eric Swanson had a comfortable win against Ray Elley, Noel Clarkson and Fred Vaughan 27 to 15. Fred led 10 to 4 after 10 ends with the remaining 13 ends being hell for his team. The first 10 ends poor old Jim and Eric had to carry Langy as he was short all the time and just could not get it up, but Langy kicked into gear for the remainder of the game with some brilliant bowls.
