Another busy month at the Bowlo:
Pennants have finished with the 6’s and 4’s playing….. well lets just say the opposite to good and leave it up to your imagination. The 3’s did reasonably well with Peter Carey’s team winning all games, would be interesting to see if any other pennants side in the past has won all their game, well done Pete. The 1’s had a slim chance in their final game but needed to win all 3 with a margin of 26 to take the flag; this did not happen with Langy’s team going down. Well done for coming runner up. The 5’s faltered towards the end with Broadwater taking the honors collecting the flag. That’s pennants till next year and hopefully we will do better and bring home a flag or two. The AGM for the Men’s club is coming up soon, so put your name in for selector, president or committee person.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
With the weather being against bowls there is not much to report.
The Zone final of the pairs was won by Reece Wilson and Aaron Teys over R.Hindry and Tom Knight by 43 shots to 7. The semi – final was a lot closer game where they played S. Dickenson and Jammie Eichorn where Reece and Aaron finally won 25 shots to 14. Congratulations to Reece and Aaron from the Ballina club for gaining another Zone final.
The fours final will be played on Sunday 8th June at Ballina Bowls Club. Semi-final will be played in the morning, with a team consisting of Jacob Speers, Reece Wilson, Jacob Heffernan and Aaron Teys representing the N.R.D.B.A.
Our two girls played at South Tweed Heads in a Junior Senior event, where they played very well without getting into the prize money. Young Stef Cselka injured her left arm playing volley ball at school and played very couragesly through out the day. Stef has to rest her arm for two weeks to overcome the injury.
Amanda Cselka will be playing at Cudgen Bowls Club on Sunday 1st. June, and has the added responsibility of playing skip in her team. Wish you well Amanda. Not only does she play bowls, but is the driver on the return journey.
Don’t forget our Junior Tournament on the 7th And 8th July.
Good bowls to all and any juniors wishing to play lawn bowls get in touch with me on 6682 6162.
Championship Games for the Month:
Minor Pairs:
Mick Little and Troy Peel scored a six on their first end in there encounter with John Forshaw and Trevor Bulmer but on end 13 it was 13 all which showed the comeback by their opposition. Mick and Troy settled down to score 4’s and 3’s from there on where there opponents could only manage 1’s, winning it 26 to 16
Major Pairs:
Bob Jarman and Merv Lavelle downed the favorites of B Mallett and Robin Montague 24 to 16. The seven ends which Merv and Bob won in a row towards the end of the game proved to be vital as it put Barry off his game who was trying hard to regain control of the mat. John Rodda and Glen Pobje out bowled Bill Marsh and Ken Taylor quiet easily to give them a good win of 24 to 8. Glen and John both played good draw bowls throughout this game with Ken and Bill always on the back foot. Vic Lindsay and Jack Kingman easily accounted for Tony Dance and Billy Mancell with an impressive 29 to 11 whitewash. This was a one-sided game with Vic and jack playing great bowls. There next encounter was up against Bob Jarman and Merv Lavelle who put up a stronger fight but still could not hold this pair with Vic and Jack winning it in a close game 18 to 13. Dave Brodin and John Lang got slaughtered on the green by John Rodda and Glen Pobje 30 to 18. Langy and Dave dropped 14 shots in 3 ends and it was all over red rover from there on, bit of a bummer as John was super confident leading up to the game.
Major Triples:
Once again Super Skip Langy proved that he is a brilliant Bowler, teamed up with Jim Verrall and Eric Swanson was just too good for Nicky Buys, Troy Peel and Robin Montague. One particular end Robin drew in for the shot 1 inch or so from the jack, the big fella gets up on the mat lets it go and with precision rest Robins Bowl out and sits right on kitty. This was a very strong win to Langy of 27 to 12. Terry Sheen, Rod Greentree and Peter Carey snatched a win in the last 4 ends of the game against Butt Butt, Bruce Cox and Carl Felsch 29 to 24. This was a good close game throughout and if Peter and Team are thinking of winning this championship they will have to lift a few notches. The upset so far goes to the Green Keeper entry of Wes Koskela, Brendon Day and Tony Morgan who beat Alby King, John Crosby and Glen Pobje 26 to 15. Glen and team hung on being only a couple of shots behind midway through the game but Tony proved too good in the second half to record a well earned win to the Green Keepers. Closest game to date goes to Barry Toms, Dave Brodin and Teddy Butler who were drawn on end 25 and with an extra end got the required shot to beat Leigh Siemsen, Steve Simmons and Jack Kingman 25 to 24, this was an entertaining game to watch with one team winning 3 ends on the trot then the other coming back and leveling it up again, it was anyone’s game and a draw would have been a better result as both teams played extremely good bowls. The green keepers of Wes Koskela, Brendon Day and Tony Morgan once again had a big win against Barry Toms, Dave Brodin and Ted Butler 29 to 16. Scoring 13 shots in 5 ends towards the end of the game gave Tony the win. Merv Lavelle, John Rodda and Russell Morris had a comeback win against Tony Dance, Steve Cselka and Alan Gilbert 25 to 17. Their was one shot in it with 3 ends to go but Russell bowled beautiful draw bowls to draw the shots with one occasion being 5 down and drawing the absolute.
