Evans Head Bowling Club |

Another busy month at the Bowlo:
Rain, Rain and more rain, bowls has been a bit scarce. During February there has been a number of championship matches on and I have reported as best as possible on them as some did not hand their cards in, so if I have some wrong – tough titties!. Sadly the Grafton trip was called off due to lack of support, this was a trip I was very much looking forward too and because a few players were not happy with their positions had pulled there names off, I am going to stop there as my next choice of words would not be printed.
It is good to see the championship matches being played at such a cracking pace, this will be to the clubs advantage further into the year. Major and Minor pairs have gone up on the board as has Triples, so make sure you put your names in by the due date.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
The N.R.D.B.A. 2008 championships are well and truly underway with both the singles and pairs championships completed. The finalists in the singles were Aaron Teys (who used to be from Evans Head Bowling Club) from Ballina Bowling Club and Jacob Heffernan from East Lismore Bowling Club, with the winner being Aaron Teys for the sixth consecutive time. Well done to Aaron and congratulations also to Jacob in making the final.
Luke Jones from Evans Head Bowling Club, in his first venture into junior bowls championships reached the semi-final, well done Luke.
The pairs final was played with great bowling finesse by Aaron Teys and Reece Wilson (both bowlers representing Ballina Bowls Club) and Beau Beddoes and Jamie Gannon (both bowlers from Lismore City Bowls Club), with the winners Aaron and Reece gradually gaining control of the game in the 17th end to run out worthy champions.
Junior Fours will be played, commencing the 8th March 2008.
Some exciting news for all junior bowlers will be released shortly, when the last of the loose ends are tied up, so if there are any young bowlers or young boys or girls wanting to take up the sport of Lawn Bowls, please ring me on 66 82 61 62 and I will put them in touch with club coaches.
Yours in bowls

Championship Games for the Month:
Men’s Fours:
Jim Mulligan, Troy Peel, Arch Rimoldi and Bruce Ravenscroft had a narrow win of 20 to 19 over John Crosby, Fred Vaughan, Eric Swanson and Steve Cselka. Jim played beautiful lead bowls and was the key to Bruce’s win, Steve bowled very good bowls and needed to draw the last bowl to make it 20 all but finished up an inch or so short.
Jim Mulligan, Col Peel (sub), Troy Peel, Bruce Ravenscroft defeated B Fischer, S Clarke, K Taylor, C Felsch 22 to 15. Bruce played some good bowls in this game converting 1 down to 5 up on one occasion, on another end going from 3 down to 2 up. This was a good win to Bruce and his team and it sets his team up for a finals berth..
P Benton, J Thomas, V Lindsay and R Morris were beaten comfortably by D Brodin, B Sten, T Sheen and P Carey 28 to 14. Over the initial six ends, Russell’s team got away to a lead of 12 shots to 5. When Peter’s team won the seventh end they rolled the jack to virtually full length, and proceeded to win the next 10 ends, putting Peter’s team in a winning position, some wonderful bowls were played by the two skips, but Russell’s team could not get back the ascendency, with Peter going on to win and earn a place in the final.
The final of the Men’s Fours was held on Tuesday Morning, Dave Brodin, Brian Sten, Terry Sheen and Peter Carey had a close 2 shot win of 19 to 17 against Jim Mulligan, Troy Peel, Arch Rimoldi and Bruce Ravenscroft. The first half of the game Bruce made some brilliant conversion shots and by cutting down from 4 or 5 down to 1 down and had Peter’s team worried, Jim once again played very good draw bowls with himself and Bruce being the best players of their team. Peter’s team did not fire on all cylinders in this game, could it have been over confidence?. There were alot of wayward bowls from both camps after the rain period and really either team could have won. But they did make the final which is what was important and congratulations to both teams, well done.
Men’s Minor Singles:
Glen Pobje had a good win against Steve Clark 31 to 28, Steve was up 14 to 2 at one stage and had members of the gallery talking about his good bowls, but he came crashing down. Steve loved the short ends and it took Glen 8 ends to get the mat and put in a long end which Steve could not adjust to. The pressure got to Steve as Glen slowly pulled the score back with Steve starting to bowl a bit erratic, especially on the long ends which were his downfall.
Dave Brodin had a good win against Steve Cselka, Steve once again got off to a flying start leading 20 to 8 but once again complacency set in with Dave winning 31 to 24. Now the saying around the Club is “Don’t do a Steve” – yep and that also goes for Steve Clark as well. BUGGER!. Lucky Phil, aka Phil Wernicke had a close win against Doug Voltz 31 to 26, Doug a new bowler put up a good fight but Phil just had the edge in this game.
Dave Brodin played Troy Peel on Thursday morning and got off to a flying start leading Troy 22 to 8, Steve marked this game and thought to himself “come on Troy roll him like he did me”, and then it started Troy got a few 1’s and a couple of 3’s and a few 2’s and before you knew it the score was Dave 29 Troy 26. By this time Dave was really feeling the pressure and was talking to himself, taking big breaths which I could hear at my end and was bowling all over the place but the big fella prevailed and got a 2 to win the Game 31 to 26. Dave will play Glen Pobje in the next round for a berth in the final, should make for a good game. Dave with nerves of steel would have to be favorite in this game.
Men’s Major Singles:
Dave Brodin had a hard fought win against John Rodda 31 to 27. John had a good lead midway through the game but Dave fought back strong to win 6 ends on the trot and set him up for the win. Rod Greentree thumped Bruce Cox 31 to 4, Bruce just could not get those old bowls working for him in this game and Rod playing beautiful draw bowls to record an impressive win.
Eric Swanson had a good win against Steve Cselka 31 to 23, Steve got off the a flying start leading 14 to 2 early on but Eric regained composure to bowl some good bowls with one end going from 2 down to 4 up. Steve started falling a metre or so short during the last third of the game and had some close misses on numerous occasions, a good win to Eric. Bill Cooper had an easy win against Troy Peel 31 to 17 with Troy picking up five shots in the last three ends of the game to make his score a bit more respectful, Bill picked the windy conditions up from end one and went on to record a good win – Will it be a Cooper v Carey Final?. Peter Carey walked over Jim Verrall winning 31 to 7, this was a huge win and Peter is firm favorite to win this title after being runner up last year, Jim in his earlier game defeated Barry O’Keefe 31 to 20. Geoff Hetherington had a comfortable win against Phil Wernicke 31 to 12, Phil was down a heap early on and just could not come to terms with the wind, and it just was not Lucky Phil’s Day, would have been good if the Jaffa’s were left at home Phil?. Terry Sheen had a good win against Steve Simmons 31 to 21; Steve did claw back an early lead that Terry had but to no avail with Terry picking the windy conditions up and playing good bowls. Jack Kingman knocked off the best lead in the club, Ted Butler 31 to 24, as Ted said Jack just bowled better bowls. This should sit well with the selectors for Jack when pennant teams are picked. In a quiet sort of a way it is good when an underdog knocks off one of the higher ranking players, seems to keep the tall poppy attitude down on a few. Glen Pobje had a hard fought win against Phil Benton 31 to 22, this was also a close game but Glen went on with it in the last bit of the game.
Men’s Senior Singles:
Barry Mallett had a comfortable win against Keith Roberts 31 to 10 with the old saying “Draw Draw Draw” that is what singles is about. Keith just could not get the draw happening in this game with many a shot being 2 to 3 metres through the head. Barry Tarver had a very close game defeating Kevin Jones 31 to 27; the last 12 ends were tit for tat with only a few shots in it, very tight game. Alan Gilbert had a close win against Norm Fox 31 to 23, Alan got off to a good start leading 22 to 7 but then the complacency set in for Alan with Norm winning 6 ends in a row and was only 4 behind at one stage. Alan went on to win the game, again there was a big come back which nearly cost him the game.
Merv Lavelle was leading Alby King 30 to 28; Alby with his last bowl trailed the jack for 3 shots to win 31 to 30. Merv was devastated but took the loss with dignity. As Langy told me ages ago, you may only need one good bowl to win the game, Alby’s bowls were brilliant. Ken Taylor had a narrow win against Barry Toms 31 to 27, there was no more than 3 shots difference in this game and it was a good draw bowls game right through, and a draw would have been deserved. Larry Sandford had a comfortable win against Peter Klaus 31 to 16 with Pete getting off to a good start but Larry bowled good draw bowls and did not run at the head as did his opponent with the game being all over after only 23 ends. Lionel Bartlett had a good game against John Crosby 31 to 22 with John pulling an early lead but Lionel with the Lizard Cap on clawed back and only really won this game in the last 5 ends. John played beautiful draw bowls but could not sustain the pressure in the last quarter of the game. Fred Vaughan had a good win against Doug Voltz 31 to 16.
Women’s Roundup with Yvonne Vaughan
A farewell lunch for Gwen Pryke and Carole Brown was held on Wednesday, 27th February. President Yvonne thanked the ladies for all their hard work during the years they had been with Evans Head Ladies Bowling Club and presented them each with a gift. Gwen had been President between 1993 and 1995 but also organised and participated in the annual Xmas Party skits which had been enjoyed by all over the years. Carole had accepted the position of Secretary when we so desperately needed one and has done a superb job during her time in office. Both Ladies will be missed immensely. Patrons and Life Members were present and along with all members wished them good bowling, good health and plenty of friendship.
A SELECTORS PRAYER
Blessed are they who can play sport
Blessed are they who can still be taught
Blessed are they who accept with grace
To play in any selected place.
Till next month keep your bowls close to the kitty.
