Evans Head Bowling Club |

Another busy month at the Bowlo:
Considering all the rain and washed out games, the weather has held up pretty well for the month. The championships are a little bit behind but it is good to see that bowlers are getting into them when the weather is fine. Our southern friends have started the pilgrimage to the best place on the planet – Evans Head, and we are all looking forward to resuming the great friendships many of us have with the “Mexicans”.
Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
On Thursday night, 1st May, our District juniors took on the Evans Head Pennant teams in a practice. Evans Head fielded teams from their No1, No3 and No4 pennant sides.
The juniors did very well, with our No1 team taking our new singles winner Robin Montague’s team to within one shot.
The other three teams did very well also, with the result as expected against very experienced teams of men pennant players. We were very proud of our juniors for the effort they all put in.
On the long weekend in June we are holding a three day camp for all junior bowlers to work on their game. A vast improvement is expected from each junior.
Toward the end of the year a team of juniors will be selected to play against a Newcastle team at Newcastle. Juniors here’s your chance to make a name for yourself by making this team.
Amanda and Stefanie Cselka went to Park Beach Bowls Club in Coffs on Sunday, 4th May, for trials to be considered for a place at the North Coast Academy of Sport and both young girls were successful.
Next practice will be at Casino RSM on the 15th May @ 6pm.
Good bowling,
Terry Sheen
Championship Games for the Month:
The singles Finals were held on Sunday 6th April, Robin Montague was the firm favorite to win against Terry Sheen in the prestigious Major Singles final and win he did. Terry hung in there for the first eight ends but after that it was all Montague. There was some brilliant bowls played in this game by both men with many a resting toucher. Well done to Robin as he beat that top players of Langy and Cooper to get into this final, also well done to Terry for gaining a place in the final. The final Score 32 to 12.
The Senior Singles was a bloody brilliant game of bowls by Fred Vaughan and Ken Taylor with the lead changing many times in the game with rarely more then 4 shots in it. Ken played the best bowls I have seen him play with Fred also bowling magnificently. This was a game that Ken won 31 to 29 and if it were at all possible a draw would have been nice as both deserved the number one spot, well done to you both.
Glen Pobje defeated Phil Wernicke 33 to 18 in the minor singles.
That’s the singles championship for our club finished until next year.
Pictured are the three winners, left to right – Ken Taylor, Robin Montague and Glen Pobje.
Robin Montague pictured below won the prestigious Men’s Single Title

Minor Pairs:
Darryl (RSL President) Pobje and son Glen had a battle on their hands against young Luke Jones and Dave Brodin in their game with the Pobje team winning it 20 to 16. Young Luke, who is only 11 years old, played really good bowls with partner Dave, I am sure next year this pair will go on a lot further and possibly win this championship.
Our President John Forshaw teamed up with veteran Trevor Bulmer against Barry Heap and number one lead Steve Clark with Trevor’s team outplaying them winning the last 6 ends on the trot to win 22 to 14, this was a close game up until then, well done Trevor and John.
Major Pairs:
The Major Pairs have kicked off with Tony Dance and Bill Mancell having a close win against Bill Fisher and Steve Clarke 24 to 20.
Bill Marsh and Ken Taylor had a comfortable win against Mick Little and Peter Koskela 37 to 12.
Ted Butler and Fred Vaughan had a good win against Norm Fox and Bruce Ravenscroft 22 to 11, at 8 ends it was neck and neck but Fred kicked along to win the next 7 ends to open up a 10 shot lead which Bruce could not get back.
Dave Brodin and John Lang had an easy win against Jim Verrall and Carl Felsch 26 to 10, Carl and Jim just could not get into this game with Langy once again showing his bowling skills and not forgetting his lead Dave who played good draw bowls.
Wayne King and Bill Cooper played Lionel Bartlett and Jimmy Thomas with Bill opening a good lead up midway through the game and never looking back, going on to win the game by 11 shots, 25 to 14.
Terry Sheen and Peter Carey played Brian Sten and Rod Greentree, and basically blew them off the green winning it 29 to 6. Rod and Brian were shell shocked after this game and have to go back to the drawing board if they are to team up again next year. Rod said that Terry bowled absolutely brilliant bowls and was the one who killed them. Peter’s new bowls? - no only borrowed from his son, who I hear is now on some sort of list! Barry Mallett and Robin Montague defeated Barry Heap and Gary Hackett 24 to 12, Gary just could not get into this game with Robin continuing on with his form from the singles win.
Vic Lindsay and Jack Kingman had the closest win so far in this comp, winning 15 to 12, this was a low scoring game with only one end being a 3, all the rest were one’s with a handful of 2’s.
Alan Gilbert and Steve Cselka defeated Ted Butler and Fred Vaughan 28 to 17 with the game finishing on the 19th end. Terry Sheen watched this game with interest as he and Peter Carey could be playing these winners. Steve led beautiful draw bowls for the game, with Terry commenting “it’s the best Steve has played and both of them worked in extremely well as a team with plenty of talk between them”.
Wayne King and Billy Cooper annihilated Ken Hardy and Eric Swanson in their game 36 to 8 with Bill scoring an 8 on the second end. You have to give credit when credit is due, well done to you both and all the other teams better watch out for this dynamic pair of bowlers.
John Lang with Dave Brodin in their next game against Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe had a close win of 17 to 13 in a low scoring game. The best win so far goes to the “Mighty Mouse” Luke Jones and his grandfather Kevin who beat Steve Simmons and Phil Wernicke in a close good game of bowls 20 to 19. Luke is one of our junior bowlers who is only 11 years old and out played his opponent with very good draw bowls. The Jones’ opened up a huge lead of 14 to nil on end 7 and may have got a bit complacent towards the end of the game but all credit to this young and upcoming bowler. On the last end with Kevin being down only one shot with the last bowl and the game won Luke yelled out repeatedly “declare the end, declare the end” it took Kevin a bit to hear this, congratulations to both on a bloody good win.
Major Triples:
The upset of the round happened in the very first game with the underdogs of Brian Sten, Jim Thomas and Bob Jarman knocking of the fab three of Barry Mallett, Wayne King and Bill Cooper 23 to 17. Bob’s team won 15 of the 25 ends in a display of brilliant bowls, with Bill’s team not getting the upper hand in the game which they needed. How many more of the hot teams will be knocked out early - only time will tell?
Noel Clarkson, Ray Elley and Freddie Vaughan had a close win against Barry Heap, Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe 29 to 19, close because on the 20th end Barry’s team was only 2 shots behind. Fred’s team won the last 5 ends to give them an extremely good win.
Jim Verrall, Eric Swanson with super skip John Lang won comfortably against Trevor Bulmer, John Duckworth and Larry Sandford 27 to 8, Langy’s team just did not let go of control and played very good bowls.
