Another busy month at the Bowlo May 2009:

Evans Head Bowls Men’s Pairs Match report:

Peter Carey and Terry Sheen had a fairly comfortable win against Steve Simmons and Phil Wernicke 24 to 12, Pete & Terry then played Larry Sandford and Jack Kingman in a close game. Even though the score says Pete won 23 to 16 there was one end that Jack dropped a 7 and this proved to be the downfall for Jack.  Brian Sten and Rod Greentree had a narrow win against John Rodda and Glen Pobje 19 to 16, with 3 ends to go it was anyone’s game. Merv Lavelle and Bob Jarman had a close win against the Jones boys -Luke and Kevin 25 to 20, it was all the Jones’s the first 9 ends and then the wheels fell off with Merv coming home strong, the 7 Kevin dropped on the 19th end was the downfall. Wayne King and Billy Cooper had an easy win against Gary Hackett and Gutty Smith 17 to 7 with Gutty conceding on the 16th end.  Barry Mallett and Robin Montague got out of jail against John Crosby and Col Peel 17 to 16 after having to play an extra end to get the win. Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe had an easy win against Troy Peel and Russell Morris 26 to 11. Doug Voltz and Eric Swanson  recorded a close win against Lionel Bartlett and Peter Klaus 19 to 16, Doug played brilliantly pulling shots out of you know where to get their team over the line, especially in the last 6 or so ends. Steve Cselka and Alan Gilbert had a big win against Jimmy Thomas and Fred Vaughan 25 to 9, Steve and Alan played very good bowls to get the win. Fred remarked after the game “Keep that up you will go on and win this”. That is the First Round over.  In the Second Round Brain Sten and Rod Greentree played Terry Sheen and Peter Carey to get a win of 27 to 23, with 4 ends to go there was one shot in it but unfortunately for Peter Rod won 3 of them to get him home. Bob Jarman and Merv Lavelle caused the upset of the comp defeating Wayne King and Bill Cooper 20 to 16 and once again it came down to the last four ends with Merv getting six shots on three of them. Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe had a good win against Tony Dance (sub) and Robin Montague 17 to 14, Geoff and Barry played good bowls to win this game. Alan Gilbert and Steve Cselka had another good win against Doug Voltz and Eric Swanson 18 to 16, this was a close game with Eric really playing good bowls, there was two dead ends in this game on end 21 with Eric killing one of them with a brilliant bowl and not to be out done Alan returned the favour next end. Then on the next end with Doug sitting inches from the kitty jack high Steve on his last bowl picked the kitty up clean to trail it back for shot, Eric could not get to the kitty because of all the bowls in front with Alan getting the win. Second round over and on to the third with Alan Gilbert and Steve Cselka getting a very good win against Geoff Hetherington and Barry O’Keefe 19 to 15, once again both Steve and Alan played well together in this game with them leading throughout the game not letting the opposition in. Brian Sten and Rod Greentree had a big win against Bob Jarman and Merv Lavelle 27 to 16, Brian played brilliant bowls in the game to give his side an easy coast home to get into the final.  The final will be played with Steve Cselka and Alan Gilbert against Brian Sten and Rod Greentree at a date to be advised, so make sure you get to watch this game as it is sure to be a cracker.

Well done to all who played and whether you won or lost you all play for the best bowls club on the coast, Evans Head!
