The numbers on Tuesday’s have whittled down to only 2 to 4 rinks now with only the diehard bowlers continuing on. New bowlers are always welcome in our club and Tuesdays is the ideal day to start your bowling career off, so get into contact with either Terry Sheen, Ted Butler or Stewy Brown who are all very good coaches and are only too happy to get you out on the green to teach you the art of bowls. It is steady as she goes with the Board being returned for another year. Congratulations to you from myself and the club’s members and commiserations to the two that were not elected to the board and they are to be congratulated for making themselves available.
The bowls presentation night is on the 22nd November so make sure you get your tickets off Margo in the office.
I apologise for missing a few dates in the Bowls section of the Northern Star for we have had a serious illness in the family and it slipped my mind.

Junior Roundup with Terry Sheen.
We are on the look-out for juniors who wish to become umpires in the game of lawn bowls.
As an umpire I will assist the juniors who wish to become an umpire in their initial coaching in the laws of the game of lawn bowls.

To test your knowledge of the game of lawn bowls, answer these questions

Should you be unable to provide the correct answer to these questions, my advice to you, become an umpire.
Our juniors are going through a quiet period at the moment, with the exception of mighty Luke , who played in the two games against Mullumbimby and played very good bowls I was informed.
We have bowls waiting to be used by junior bowlers, but there does not seem to be any junior bowlers around. Parents and grand parents if you have children between the ages of eight to fifteen years, and you would like them to play sport (non contact) give me a ring on 66 82 6162, with Christmas holidays approaching what better way to spend their time than learning to play the game of lawn bowls.
Yours in bowls Terry Sheen.

Mixed Pairs:
The mixed pairs have started with many good games being played, Eric and Merle Swanson had a narrow 1 shot win against Stef Cselka and Glenn Pobje by 19 to 18, and very good bowls were played by both teams. Pam and Doug Voltz defeated Julie Roberts and Lionel Bartlett 21 to 18, Doug opened up a very good lead early on with Lionel clawing back to within 1 shot at one stage but it was not enough. Vicky Hart and Geoff Hetherington had finished 19 all on the 21st end against Steve and Tania Cselka and got the required shot on the extra end with Steve’s last bowl finishing an inch outside of shot. Sue Downs and Barry Mallett had a huge win against Barb Lee and Phil Wernicke of 34 to 11, Sue played magnificent bowls in this game and was the key to their win. In their next game Sue and Barry played Amanda Cselka and Russell Morris and also defeated them but by not as large a margin winning it by 22 to 15. Wyn Beck and Wayne King also had a large win against Hilda Hardy and Dave Brodin 33 to 10, both Wyn and Wayne played very good bowls in this game. Pam and Doug Voltz continued on their winning streak defeating Betty Chandler and Ken Taylor 24 to 18, once again they opened up a huge lead early on to have it reduced to only 2 shots at one stage but a four on the last end clinched the win. Jean Deuchar and Super Skip John Lang had an easy win against Yvonne and Fred Vaughan of 27 to 12, well done Langy and once again you are my favorite for the tournament. Bev and Robin Montague had a narrow win against Norm and Mavis Fox of 22 to 19, Norm picked up 5 and then a 1 on the last two ends but it wasn’t enough. Pauline McCarthy and Ted Butler defeated Gail Marczan and Merv Lavelle 21 to 19 in another close scoring game, Merv had this game leading it comfortably up till the 18th end with Ted winning the last 3 ends scoring 6 shots in total allowing him to get out of jail. Debbie Butters and Troy Peel had a loss to Pauline McCarthy and Ted Butler going down 22 to 18, Troy was very pleased after this game with their performance and rightly so. Pam and Doug Voltz played Eric and Merle Swanson and opened up a comfortable lead which has become their style leading 13 to 3 but then the wheels fell of with Eric scoring on 9 of the last 12 ends to win it well 28 to 18. Doug it looks like you have caught the “Don’t do a Steve” in a championship game, something you and I will have to work on I think matey. Bev and Robin Montague had an excellent game of bowls against Pauline McCarthy and Ted Butler. Ted opened up a commanding lead of 15 to 5 going into the 14th end and looked to have the game wrapped up but Robin and Bev won 7 of the last 8 ends to win it 21 to 18, I suppose for me anyway it is comforting to see that this phenomena just does not apply to myself, well done to both Bev and Robin. Wyn Beck and Wayne King had an exciting game against Sue Downs and Barry Mallet, Barry opened up a fair size lead early on but to Wayne’s credit they fought their way back into the game winning 5 of the last 6 ends to record a one shot win of 18 to 17, bugger me how close are these games from the top bowlers in our club - excellent!

Men’s Triples FINAL
Terry Sheen, Rod Greentree and Peter Carey had an easy win against Jim Verrall, Eric Swanson and John Lang 28 to 12. Peter got off to a flying start early on leading 16 to 5 on end 14, John in the next 3 ends scored 5 shots which bought it to a 6 shot game, but unfortunately they dropped a 5 on the next end which undid all their hard work. Peter once again bowled magic bowls and I feel that he would be the best consistent bowler in the club at present, well done to you Pete and your team for a great win.
